How to Rank in Gemini: Get Your Brand Cited in Gemini Answers (2026)

By · Published · 11 min read

Question fanning out to many sources, illustrating Gemini query fan-out

Short answer

To rank in Gemini, first be findable in Google Search, because the Gemini app grounds answers in content from the Google Search index. Keep Google-Extended open if you want your pages used for that grounding. Then answer narrow questions clearly, earn honest mentions on Reddit and YouTube, and track the Gemini app separately from AI Overviews.

Key takeaways

  • Google defines grounding in Gemini Apps as providing content from the Google Search index to the model at prompt time, so Google indexing is the foundation of Gemini visibility.
  • Google-Extended controls whether your content is used for Gemini training and for grounding in Gemini Apps and Vertex AI; it does not affect Google Search inclusion or ranking.
  • Search Console's Generative AI performance report covers AI Overviews and AI Mode, and Google's help page does not list the Gemini app, so you need your own prompt tracking for Gemini.
  • Ahrefs' September 2026 analysis of 3M+ US Gemini queries found Reddit at 28.5%, YouTube at 14.6%, and Wikipedia at 8.8% of citations among the top 50 most cited sites.
  • Not every Gemini response includes sources; when it does, a Sources button opens a side panel of links.

Gemini is Google's AI assistant, and for buyers already living in Google's products it is often the first one they ask. When it answers a research question with sources, it draws on Google's search index, which means the work you have done in Google SEO is a head start. It is not the whole job: Gemini has its own controls, its own citation patterns, and no dedicated reporting for site owners.

This guide explains how Gemini grounds answers, which settings affect it, what content it cites, how it differs from AI Overviews, and how to measure your presence.

How does Gemini find sources for its answers?#

The Gemini app grounds answers by pulling content from the Google Search index into the model at the moment you ask. If your pages are not well indexed and competitive in Google Search, Gemini has little reason to find them.

Google's crawler documentation defines grounding in Gemini Apps as "providing content from the Google Search index to the model at prompt time." Google's developer docs for Grounding with Google Search in the Gemini API describe how that kind of grounding works:

  1. The model decides whether a search would improve the answer.
  2. If so, it generates one or more search queries and runs them.
  3. It reads the results and combines them into a response.
  4. It returns the answer with citations that link spans of text to source URLs.

That describes the developer API, and Google does not publish the exact pipeline for the consumer Gemini app. The pattern is still useful: Gemini is answering the queries it writes, not the user's literal words, and it only searches when it judges that search will help.

On the consumer side, Google's Gemini Apps help center says Gemini "may provide links to sources and related content," shown through a Sources button at the bottom of the response or inline, which opens a side panel. It also notes that not all responses include sources.

Which settings control whether Gemini can use your content?#

Google-Extended is the switch that matters for Gemini. It controls whether your content is used to train Gemini models and to ground answers in Gemini Apps, and it has no effect on Google Search ranking.

Control Gemini app Google Search and AI Overviews
Google-Extended (robots.txt user agent token) Governs use for Gemini training and for grounding in Gemini Apps and Vertex AI Does not affect inclusion in Search; not a ranking signal
Googlebot (robots.txt) Indirect: pages Googlebot cannot crawl cannot be in the Search index that grounding draws on Controls crawling for Search
noindex Indirect: a page that is not indexed is not in the index used for grounding Removes the page from Search
Search Console > Search generative AI Not listed as covering the Gemini app Covers AI Overviews, AI Mode, and Discover AI features

Sources: Google's common crawlers, Search generative AI control.

This creates a real decision. If your site blocked Google-Extended to keep content out of AI training, note that Google's documentation puts grounding in Gemini Apps under the same token, so the block can also keep your pages out of the content Gemini uses to answer. If Gemini visibility matters to you, review your robots.txt with whoever made that call and decide deliberately. To check, look for a group like this:

User-agent: Google-Extended
Disallow: /

If you find it and want to be used for grounding, remove it or change it to Allow: /.

What content does Gemini cite?#

Gemini cites pages that answer the specific question it searched for, and in large studies it leans heavily on Reddit, YouTube, and Wikipedia. Your own pages compete for direct answers; third-party sources shape recommendations.

Ahrefs' analysis of more than 3 million US Gemini queries (updated September 2, 2026) found these leading domains:

Domain Share of citations among the top 50 cited sites Pages cited
reddit.com 28.5% 388,496
youtube.com 14.6% 187,970
en.wikipedia.org 8.8% 72,435

Two cautions: the shares are a percentage of citations to the top 50 sites, not of all Gemini citations, and Ahrefs does not say which Gemini surface the data comes from. Use it as directional evidence of which kinds of sources Gemini trusts, not as an exact market share.

For your own pages, apply what Google says about its generative AI features in its optimization guide, which covers Search but describes the same index:

  • Original, non-commodity content. Google contrasts first-hand content with "commodity content" based on common knowledge. Your test results, real pricing, and documented limitations are what make a page worth citing.
  • Clear structure. Paragraphs, sections, and headings. Answer the question in the first sentence under each heading.
  • Crawlable text. Keep key facts in HTML text that Google can render, not only in images or behind client-side scripts.
  • Supporting video and images. Google recommends supporting text with relevant, high-quality images and video, which also lines up with YouTube's prominence in Gemini citations.
  • No AI-only tricks. Google says you do not need llms.txt, special schema, or content chunking for its generative AI search features.

The same answer-first structure is the core of answer engine optimization, and our GEO checklist turns it into page-by-page steps. The same structure carries over to OpenAI's engine, covered in our guide on how to rank in ChatGPT.

Which pages should you improve first for Gemini?#

Start with the pages that answer buying questions, because those are the prompts where a citation changes what people choose. Polish your homepage last; Gemini rarely needs it to answer a specific question.

A practical priority order:

  1. Comparison pages ("[You] vs [Competitor]," "alternatives to [Competitor]"). State the real differences in a table, including where the other product wins.
  2. Use-case pages ("[category] for agencies," "[category] for Shopify"). These match the narrow queries Gemini writes after a user describes their situation.
  3. Pricing and limits. One canonical, dated page with plan prices, usage limits, and what each plan excludes.
  4. Setup and integration docs. Public, crawlable help articles answer "how do I connect X to Y" questions directly.
  5. Original research. Benchmarks or survey data you collected give Gemini a fact it cannot get elsewhere.

Rerun your Gemini prompts after each batch of changes so you can see which page types moved.

How is Gemini different from Google AI Overviews and AI Mode?#

They share Google's index, but the Gemini app is a separate chat product with different controls and no Search Console reporting. A page can appear in AI Overviews and still be missing from Gemini, or the reverse.

Gemini app AI Overviews AI Mode
Where it appears gemini.google.com and Gemini mobile apps Inside Google Search results Separate conversational mode in Google Search

Shows sources Sometimes, via the Sources button Linked source cards Links
Site owner reporting None from Google Search Console Generative AI performance report Search Console Generative AI performance report

Conversation context is another difference. A user in the Gemini app may have already described their company size, budget, or stack several messages earlier, so the query Gemini writes can be much more specific than a typical Google search. Pages that address specific situations ("for teams under 10," "for Shopify stores," "for HIPAA workloads") match those narrower queries. For the Search side, see how to rank in Google AI Overviews.

How do you track whether Gemini mentions or cites you?#

Run a fixed set of buyer questions in the Gemini app every week and log mentions, positions, competitors, and Sources links. Google provides no Gemini app report for site owners, so this is the only direct measurement.

  1. Write 20 to 50 buyer prompts. Include category, comparison, problem, and "is [brand] good for X" questions. Add a few multi-turn conversations that state a use case first, since that is how many people use Gemini.
  2. Control the setup. Same account type, same country, and a clean history. Personal context changes the answer.
  3. Log everything. Whether a Sources button appeared, every brand named and its order, and every linked URL.
  4. Open the links. Make sure a citation that looks like yours is actually your page, and note which claim it supports.
  5. Separate surfaces. Keep Gemini app results apart from AI Overviews and AI Mode data, which you can partly see in Search Console.
  6. Benchmark competitors. A 30% mention rate is good or bad only relative to the brands you compete with. That ratio is your AI share of voice.

Sleeng runs this for you: it generates buyer-intent questions from your URL, runs them on Gemini alongside ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, and AI Mode, and logs every mention and citation against your competitors.

How do Reddit and YouTube fit into a Gemini strategy?#

Reddit and YouTube are the two most cited domains in Ahrefs' US Gemini data, so the conversations and videos about your category influence what Gemini says. Contribute to both honestly instead of trying to game them.

Reddit. Google has accessed Reddit's Data API since its February 2024 partnership, which Google said gives it fresher, structured Reddit content. To participate well:

  1. Collect the Reddit threads Gemini cites for your prompts. Those are the conversations worth joining.
  2. Follow each subreddit's rules and Reddit's Content Policy, which asks users to participate authentically in communities where they have a personal interest and bans spam and content manipulation.
  3. Disclose your affiliation ("I work at [brand]") every time.
  4. Answer the actual question with specifics, including when a competitor is the better fit.
  5. Use one real account and never manipulate votes. See Reddit self-promotion rules and our Reddit AEO guide for detail.

YouTube. If buyers search for tutorials, walkthroughs, or comparisons in your category, publish videos that answer one question each, with titles and descriptions that state the question and answer plainly. Add accurate captions so the spoken content is also available as text.

Frequently asked questions

Is ranking in Gemini the same as ranking in Google AI Overviews?

They overlap but are not the same. Both draw on Google's search index, yet the Gemini app is a separate chat product with its own conversation context, and Google documents different controls for each. Google-Extended affects grounding in Gemini Apps, while the Search Console generative AI setting covers AI Overviews and AI Mode. Track each surface separately.

Will blocking Google-Extended hurt my Google rankings?

No. Google states that Google-Extended does not affect a site's inclusion in Google Search and is not used as a ranking signal. It does govern whether your content can be used to train Gemini models and to ground answers in Gemini Apps and Vertex AI, so blocking it is a tradeoff between training control and Gemini visibility.

Why doesn't Gemini show sources for some answers?

Google's Gemini Apps help center says not every response includes related links or sources. If there is no Sources button, Gemini did not provide links for that response. Google's Gemini API documentation explains that the model first decides whether a search would improve the answer, so general or creative requests may not trigger search at all. Focus your tracking on buyer research questions, where sources are more useful.

Does YouTube help my brand appear in Gemini?

Probably, for many categories. In Ahrefs' September 2026 data on US Gemini queries, YouTube was the second most cited domain at 14.6% of citations among the top 50 sites. Google also recommends supporting text with relevant video. If your buyers watch tutorials or reviews, a useful video with an accurate title and description gives Gemini another source to cite.

How do I check if Gemini mentions my brand?

Run a fixed set of buyer questions in the Gemini app on a schedule, signed in with a clean account and a consistent location. Record whether your brand is named, its position, which competitors appear, and every link in the Sources panel. Repeat weekly, because answers vary between runs. Tracking tools can automate this across Gemini and other engines.

Does Gemini favor Google's own properties?

Google-owned sites such as YouTube rank high in some third-party citation datasets, but Google has not said Gemini prefers its own properties. In Ahrefs' September 2026 US data, Reddit, not a Google property, was the most cited domain in Gemini answers. Treat YouTube as one important channel among several, not a requirement.
