Reddit AEO: How Reddit Shapes ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini Answers

By · Published · 13 min read

Community discussion thread feeding an AI answer

Short answer

Reddit AEO is the practice of earning accurate, disclosed brand presence in the Reddit threads that AI engines cite. Reddit content reaches Google's AI products and ChatGPT through data agreements announced in 2024, and citation studies rank Reddit among the most-cited domains. Find the threads cited for your buyer questions, contribute genuinely useful answers, and track whether AI answers change.

Key takeaways

  • Reddit licensed its Data API to Google (announced February 22, 2024) and to OpenAI (announced May 16, 2024) for use in their products.
  • Peec AI's March 2026 study of 30 million citations ranked Reddit first overall across ChatGPT, AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity and AI Overviews.
  • Studies disagree by platform and date: Ahrefs' June 2025 data had Reddit in the AI Overviews top ten but not in ChatGPT's or Perplexity's.
  • Reddit sued Anthropic in June 2025 and Perplexity in October 2025 over alleged unauthorized use of its content.
  • The only durable Reddit AEO tactic is disclosed, rule-following participation in the specific threads AI engines cite for your buyer questions.

When a buyer asks ChatGPT "what's the best CRM for a five-person agency?", the answer is written from sources, and Reddit is often one of them. If the Reddit threads behind that answer recommend three competitors and never mention you, the AI answer probably will not either.

Reddit AEO (answer engine optimization) is the work of understanding which Reddit threads shape AI answers in your category and earning an accurate, disclosed presence in them. This guide explains how Reddit content reaches each major AI engine, what the data agreements actually say, and what a brand can ethically do about it.

What is Reddit AEO?#

Reddit AEO is the practice of improving how your brand appears in AI-generated answers by participating in the Reddit discussions those answers draw on. It is a subset of answer engine optimization, focused on one of the sources AI engines cite most often.

It differs from traditional Reddit marketing in its target. The goal is not upvotes or traffic from a single post. It is accurate representation in the specific threads that ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude, Google AI Overviews, and AI Mode cite when buyers ask about your category.

How does Reddit content get into AI answers?#

Reddit content reaches AI engines in three main ways: licensed data access, live web retrieval, and model training. The mix differs by engine.

  • Licensed access. Reddit has agreements giving Google and OpenAI structured access to its Data API.
  • Retrieval at answer time. AI search features fetch pages, including Reddit threads, while composing an answer, and often cite them.
  • Training data. Content can influence a model's general knowledge. Reddit's Data API Terms say no right is granted to use user content for training a machine learning or AI model without permission, and Reddit's robots.txt, checked on October 22, 2026, disallows all user agents by default.

AI engines often summarize real discussions, so being part of them matters.

What do the Reddit, Google and OpenAI data deals actually say?#

Both agreements were announced in 2024 and both run through Reddit's Data API. Here is what the official announcements state.

Reddit and Google (February 22, 2024)

Reddit's announcement says the partnership gives Google programmatic access to new and existing public Reddit posts and comments through the Data API, which Google can use to improve its products, "including supporting new ways to display Reddit content and providing more efficient ways to train models." Google's announcement adds that Reddit will use Google Cloud's Vertex AI to build features, and that Google plans more content-forward displays of Reddit information across its products.

Reddit and OpenAI (May 16, 2024)

Reddit's announcement says OpenAI will access Reddit's Data API to bring Reddit content to ChatGPT and new products, helping its tools "better understand and showcase Reddit content, especially on recent topics." Reddit will build AI features on OpenAI's models, and OpenAI became a Reddit advertising partner.

What neither deal says

  • Neither announcement disclosed financial terms.
  • Neither promises that Reddit content will be cited in any particular answer.
  • Both state that the deals do not change Reddit's Data API Terms, under which commercial use of Reddit data requires Reddit's approval.

Which AI engines rely on Reddit, and how much?#

Reddit is among the most-cited sources across AI engines, but the exact share depends on the engine, the study, and the month. Treat any single percentage with caution. Our Reddit statistics roundup collects the current citation figures with their sources.

Engine Reddit relationship What citation studies found
ChatGPT OpenAI partnership announced May 16, 2024 Peec AI (March 2026): Reddit #2 behind Wikipedia. Ahrefs (June 2025 data): Reddit not in ChatGPT's top ten
Google AI Overviews Google partnership announced February 22, 2024 Peec AI: Reddit #2. Ahrefs: 7.4% mention share, in the top ten
Google AI Mode Same Google partnership Peec AI: Reddit #2
Gemini Same Google partnership Peec AI: Reddit #1
Perplexity No announced agreement; Reddit sued Perplexity in October 2025 Peec AI: Reddit #1. Ahrefs: Reddit not in the top ten
Claude No announced agreement; Reddit sued Anthropic in June 2025 Not included in either study

Sources: Peec AI, 30 million citations, published March 2026; Ahrefs, about 78.6 million AI responses, June 2025.

The disagreement is itself useful information. The studies used different samples, dates, and counting methods, and AI engines change their sourcing often. The only reliable way to know how much Reddit matters for your category is to test your own buyer questions.

Why the lawsuits matter

Reddit has gone to court over access to its content. In June 2025 it sued Anthropic in California Superior Court in San Francisco, alleging bots accessed Reddit after being asked not to; Anthropic said it disagreed and would defend itself. In October 2025 it sued Perplexity and three data companies in federal court in New York, alleging they scraped Reddit content from Google results; Perplexity said it would fight for users' right to access public knowledge. Check the current status of these cases before citing them, since outcomes could change how these engines use Reddit.

Claude itself has offered web search with citations since March 20, 2025, so it can cite Reddit pages it retrieves even without a data agreement.

How do you do Reddit AEO step by step?#

Work from the AI answers backward to the threads, then into the threads. This keeps effort focused on discussions that actually influence buyers.

  1. Write your buyer questions. 20 to 50 questions a buyer asks an AI engine before choosing: "best [category] for [segment]", "[competitor] alternatives", "is [your brand] good for [use case]". Our guide to ranking in ChatGPT covers how one major engine interprets these.
  2. Run them across engines. ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude, Google AI Overviews, and AI Mode. Record whether you are mentioned, which competitors are, and every cited source.
  3. Isolate the Reddit citations. List each cited Reddit thread with its subreddit, age, and what it says about you and your competitors.
  4. Prioritize. Start with threads cited across several engines or several questions, in subreddits that allow vendor participation.
  5. Read the rules. Check each subreddit's sidebar and wiki. Our guide to Reddit self-promotion rules explains common restrictions.
  6. Contribute the most useful answer. Disclose ("I work at X"), answer the asker's actual situation, include trade-offs, and add concrete facts an AI engine could quote: pricing, limits, integrations, who it is not for.
  7. Correct outdated claims. Old threads with wrong pricing or long-fixed bugs are common in AI citations. A polite, sourced correction helps every future reader and every future summary.
  8. Re-measure monthly. Re-run the same questions and compare mentions and citations.

Sleeng is built for this loop. It generates the buyer questions from your URL, runs them on ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini, Google AI Overviews, and AI Mode, logs mentions and citations, shows your AI share of voice against competitors, and finds the Reddit threads those answers cite. It drafts comments for you to review and approve, and its Chrome extension posts approved comments from your own Reddit account, so Sleeng never sees your password.

What makes a Reddit comment likely to be useful to AI engines?#

The same qualities that make a comment useful to a human reader: it is specific, factual, and directly answers the question. Nobody outside the AI companies knows exactly how each engine selects passages, so write for the person first.

  • Lead with the answer. "For a five-person agency, X works if you need Y; skip it if you need Z."
  • Include checkable specifics. Prices with dates, plan limits, named integrations, setup time.
  • Be fair about trade-offs. Comments that name where a product falls short are more credible to readers.
  • Disclose clearly. "I work at X" in the first line.
  • Write in plain text. Short paragraphs and lists are easier to read and to quote.

What should you never do for Reddit AEO?#

Never try to manufacture the consensus AI engines summarize. It violates Reddit's rules, and it puts the brand at risk in exactly the threads you most want to influence.

  • No vote manipulation, purchased upvotes, or coordinated upvoting by staff. Reddit's Rules prohibit content manipulation.
  • No fake, bought, or "aged" accounts, and no multiple accounts. Rule 5 asks users not to mislead others or impersonate anyone deceptively.
  • No undisclosed staff, agency, or affiliate posts.
  • No mass-produced AI comments. Every comment should be reviewed and posted by a person who stands behind it.

Reddit's Q2 2026 shareholder letter says it uses AI and community moderation to remove spam and coordinated inauthentic behavior. If an account is struggling to get comments seen, read about Reddit shadowbans before doing anything else.

How long does Reddit AEO take to show results?#

Expect weeks to months, not days, and expect noise. AI answers vary from one run to the next, and engines change their sources and models without notice.

  • Retrieval-based answers can change quickly. When an engine fetches pages at answer time, a thread that gains a useful, upvoted reply can be reflected in later answers. No one outside the AI companies can promise when.
  • Model knowledge changes slowly. What a model learned in training only updates when a new version ships.
  • Measure across many questions. One question flipping from "not mentioned" to "mentioned" is not a result. A rising mention rate across 30 or more questions over two or three months is.

Reddit AEO checklist

  • 20 to 50 buyer questions written in customers' own words
  • Questions run on ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode
  • Every cited Reddit thread logged with subreddit, age, and brands mentioned
  • Subreddit rules read for each priority thread
  • Disclosed, specific replies posted by a real person, one account each
  • Outdated claims about your product corrected with sources
  • Monthly re-run with the same questions and engines
  • Results shared with marketing, product and support

How do you measure Reddit AEO results?#

Measure changes in AI answers, not Reddit vanity metrics. Use the same question set and engines every month.

Metric Definition
AI mention rate Share of buyer questions where your brand is named, per engine
AI share of voice Your mentions versus competitors' across the question set
Reddit citation share Share of cited sources that are Reddit threads, per engine
Participation overlap Share of cited Reddit threads where you have a disclosed, helpful comment
Accuracy Share of AI answers that describe your product correctly

Run each question more than once per engine and record the share of runs that mention you, because single answers vary. Keep your question list stable for at least a quarter so trends are comparable, and add new questions in a separate group rather than mixing them into the baseline.

Frequently asked questions

Does ChatGPT use Reddit?

Yes. Reddit and OpenAI announced a partnership on May 16, 2024, under which OpenAI accesses Reddit's Data API to bring Reddit content into ChatGPT and new products. How often ChatGPT cites Reddit in a given answer varies by question and over time, so check the specific prompts your buyers use rather than relying on averages.

Does Google AI Overviews use Reddit?

Reddit threads regularly appear as sources in Google AI Overviews. Google's February 2024 partnership with Reddit gives it real-time, structured access to Reddit content through the Data API, which Reddit said Google can use to improve products and train models. Citation studies, including Ahrefs' June 2025 analysis, find Reddit among the top cited domains in AI Overviews.

Does Claude cite Reddit?

Claude has had web search since March 2025 and provides citations for the sources it uses, which can include Reddit threads when they are relevant. Reddit has not announced a data partnership with Anthropic; it sued Anthropic in June 2025 alleging unauthorized scraping. Test your own category questions in Claude to see which sources it cites.

What is the difference between Reddit SEO and Reddit AEO?

Reddit SEO is about Reddit threads that rank in Google's regular results. Reddit AEO is about Reddit threads that AI engines cite or draw on when they write answers. They overlap heavily, since many cited threads also rank, but AEO is measured by mentions and citations in AI answers rather than by search positions.

Can I get my brand into AI answers by posting on Reddit?

Posting promotional threads rarely works and usually breaks subreddit rules. What can help is adding a disclosed, specific, genuinely useful answer to threads that AI engines already cite for your buyer questions, and correcting outdated information about your product. Results are not guaranteed, and changes in AI answers can take weeks to appear.

How do I measure Reddit AEO?

Run a fixed set of buyer questions across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google's AI features on a schedule. For each answer, record whether your brand is mentioned, which competitors are named, and which Reddit threads are cited. Track your AI share of voice and the overlap between cited threads and threads where you have participated.
