How to Rank in ChatGPT: Get Your Brand Cited in ChatGPT Search (2026)

By · Published · 12 min read

Chat answer card citing a source, illustrating how to rank in ChatGPT

Short answer

To rank in ChatGPT, let OAI-SearchBot crawl your site and make sure your CDN allows OpenAI's published IPs, get indexed by the search providers ChatGPT queries (Microsoft Bing among them), and publish pages that answer the rewritten sub-queries ChatGPT sends. Then earn mentions on sources it already cites, such as Wikipedia and relevant Reddit threads, and track citations per prompt.

Key takeaways

  • OpenAI's help center says a site is eligible for ChatGPT search only if OAI-SearchBot can crawl it and the host or CDN allows traffic from OpenAI's published searchbot IP addresses.
  • OAI-SearchBot (search) and GPTBot (model training) are controlled separately in robots.txt, so you can block training and still appear in ChatGPT search.
  • ChatGPT typically rewrites a question into one or more targeted queries and sends them to search providers, so pages that answer narrow sub-questions get pulled in.
  • In Profound's dataset of 680 million citations (August 2024 to June 2025), Wikipedia was ChatGPT's most cited source at 7.8% of all citations, and Reddit made up 1.8%.
  • Citations can be wrong: a March 2025 Tow Center test found ChatGPT misidentified the source in 134 of 200 news queries, so always open and verify the cited URL.

ChatGPT now answers a large share of the questions your buyers used to type into Google, and when it searches the web it shows only a handful of sources. If your brand is not one of them, you are not in the answer. The good news: ChatGPT search runs on mechanics you can inspect, including a named crawler, documented robots.txt rules, and a query-rewriting step OpenAI describes in its own help center.

This guide covers how ChatGPT picks sources, the technical setup it requires, the content patterns that get pulled into answers, how to check whether you are cited, and where Reddit fits.

How does ChatGPT decide which sources to cite?#

ChatGPT decides whether a question needs current information, rewrites it into one or more search queries, sends those to search providers, and then cites the pages it used. You cannot buy placement, and OpenAI says ranking uses "multiple factors" with no guarantee.

OpenAI's help article Searching the web with ChatGPT (checked October 2026) lays out the steps:

  • It searches automatically when it helps. ChatGPT "may search the web automatically when your question would benefit from current information." Users can also trigger Search manually.
  • It rewrites the query. When ChatGPT works with search providers, it "typically rewrites your query into one or more targeted queries." OpenAI's example turns a broad question about CCR8 cancer drugs into "CCR8 immunotherapy drug development 2025," then sends a more specific follow-up query after reviewing the first results.
  • It personalizes with location and memory. ChatGPT may use approximate location from the IP address, and saved memories, when it rewrites a query.
  • It cites what it used. Responses that use search may include inline citations and a Sources panel.

Where do the results come from? MarTech's coverage of the October 2024 launch quotes OpenAI saying ChatGPT search "leverages third-party search providers, as well as content provided directly by our partners," and reports that Microsoft Bing is one of those providers. The current help article links to Microsoft's and Shopify's privacy statements for queries shared with providers. OpenAI does not publish a complete provider list or a ranking formula, so anything more specific you read elsewhere is inference.

The practical takeaway: ChatGPT does not rank your page for the user's literal question. It ranks you for the narrower queries it writes on the user's behalf. Pages that answer one specific sub-question cleanly are easier to pull in than broad pages that answer everything vaguely.

Which OpenAI crawlers do you need to allow?#

Allow OAI-SearchBot for ChatGPT search. GPTBot is a separate training crawler, and ChatGPT-User handles user-triggered page visits. Each has its own robots.txt setting.

From OpenAI's crawler documentation:

User agent What it does Affects ChatGPT search visibility? robots.txt behavior IP list
OAI-SearchBot Surfaces websites in ChatGPT's search features Yes. Opted-out sites are not shown in search answers, though they may still appear as navigational links Respected; changes take about 24 hours openai.com/searchbot.json
GPTBot Crawls content that may be used to train foundation models No Respected; disallowing signals content should not be used for training openai.com/gptbot.json
ChatGPT-User Visits pages when a user's action in ChatGPT or a Custom GPT requests it No, not used for automatic crawling OpenAI says robots.txt rules "may not apply" because a user initiated the action openai.com/chatgpt-user.json

OpenAI states that "each setting is independent of the others." A common setup for brands that want visibility but not training use:

User-agent: OAI-SearchBot
Allow: /

User-agent: GPTBot
Disallow: /

Note OpenAI's caveat: if you allow both, it may use the results of one crawl for both purposes.

The step most teams miss is the firewall. OpenAI's help center says that to be eligible you must "allow OAI-Searchbot to crawl the site and confirm that the website host or content delivery network allows traffic from OpenAI's published searchbot IP addresses." Bot-protection rules on Cloudflare, Akamai, Vercel, or a WAF often block unfamiliar crawlers by default. Check your firewall logs for blocked requests from the IP ranges in searchbot.json.

Crawler, index and answer pipeline behind ChatGPT search
ChatGPT search can only cite pages its crawler can reach and its search providers have indexed.

How do you get indexed by the search providers ChatGPT uses?#

Make sure your pages are in Bing's index, since Bing is the provider OpenAI's launch coverage named, and keep them crawlable and fresh. A page that no provider returns for the rewritten query will not get cited, no matter how good it is.

Steps:

  1. Verify your site in Bing Webmaster Tools. Submit your XML sitemap and use URL Inspection on your most important pages. Many teams have never opened it because Google dominates their traffic.
  2. Use IndexNow to notify Bing when pages are added, changed, or removed. IndexNow is supported by Microsoft Bing, Naver, Seznam.cz, Yandex, and Yep.
  3. Render important content in HTML. If your comparison table or pricing only appears after client-side JavaScript runs, some crawlers may see an empty page. Server-render the parts you want quoted.
  4. Fix canonical and duplicate issues. A March 2025 Tow Center study found ChatGPT cited a Yahoo News republication of a USA Today article that USA Today had blocked. If your content is syndicated, the copy can win the citation instead of you.
  5. Watch the AI Performance report in Bing Webmaster Tools. Microsoft launched it in public preview in February 2026. It reports citations in Microsoft Copilot, Bing's AI summaries, and select partner integrations. It does not claim to report ChatGPT citations, but it shows which of your pages AI systems that use Bing's index tend to pick.

What content does ChatGPT pull into answers?#

ChatGPT pulls pages that directly answer the specific sub-question it searched for, with the answer stated plainly near the top of the relevant section. Since you cannot see its rewritten queries, write each section as if it were the answer to one narrow query.

Patterns that match how the query rewriting works:

  • Lead each section with the answer. Put a one or two sentence answer under every heading, then the detail. If ChatGPT's query is "Acme vs Globex pricing 2026," the passage that states both prices in one sentence is the one worth citing.
  • Name entities exactly. Use full product names, plan names, version numbers, and dates. The OpenAI example query included a year, and rewritten queries often add qualifiers like the current year, a location, or a use case.
  • Write a page per real question. "Best CRM for 5-person agencies" and "CRM with built-in invoicing" are different queries. One page trying to cover both usually loses to two focused pages.
  • Publish facts other pages do not have. Original benchmarks, pricing tables you keep current, setup times you measured, and documented limitations give ChatGPT a reason to cite you rather than the 20 pages that repeat the same summary.
  • Date-stamp and maintain. Show a visible "updated" date and actually update the content. Current-year qualifiers in rewritten queries favor pages that are visibly current.
  • Make comparison and pricing pages honest. Buyers ask ChatGPT for comparisons constantly. A page that says where a competitor is better is more likely to be treated as a fair source than one that claims to win every row.

Which third-party sources does ChatGPT cite most?#

Wikipedia leads by a wide margin, with Reddit a distant second, in the largest published study. That means your visibility depends partly on what other sites say about you, not only on your own pages.

Profound's analysis of 680 million citations from August 2024 to June 2025 found:

Source Share of all ChatGPT citations in the dataset
Wikipedia 7.8%
Reddit 1.8%

Profound also reports a "top source share," the share among only the ten most cited domains, where Wikipedia accounts for 47.9% for ChatGPT. That number uses a much smaller denominator, which is why you see both figures quoted around the web. Always state the denominator when you cite one.

What this means in practice:

  • Wikipedia: You cannot write your own article, and you should not try. If your company or category is notable, independent coverage in reputable publications is what eventually makes a neutral Wikipedia mention possible.
  • Review and comparison sites: If ChatGPT cites G2, Capterra, or niche review sites for your category, keeping your profile accurate and asking real customers for reviews are fair, low-risk moves.
  • Reddit and forums: Covered below. This is where a small brand can show up in a cited source without waiting for press coverage.
  • Your own docs and help center: For "how do I do X in [product]" questions, public, crawlable docs are often the most citable page you have.

How do you check whether ChatGPT cites your brand?#

Build a fixed list of buyer prompts, run them on a schedule, and log two things for each answer: whether your brand is mentioned and whether your URL is cited. There is no official ChatGPT citation report, so you have to measure from the outside.

A workable routine:

  1. Write 20 to 50 prompts your buyers would actually type. Mix category ("best tool for X"), comparison ("A vs B"), problem ("how do I fix Y"), and brand ("is [brand] worth it") questions.
  2. Run them in a clean session with memory off and Search on, because memory and location change the rewritten query. Note the country you are running from.
  3. Log the answer, every brand named, and every URL cited. Open each cited URL. The Tow Center test above found ChatGPT misidentified the source in 134 of 200 queries, so a citation that looks like you may point to a copy of your page or a different page entirely.
  4. Repeat weekly. Answers vary between runs, so one check proves little. Look at the rate across many runs.
  5. Cross-check your own data. Look for referral traffic from chatgpt.com in analytics, and for OAI-SearchBot and ChatGPT-User requests in server logs. A rise in ChatGPT-User visits to a page can signal that people are asking ChatGPT questions that page answers.
  6. Compare against competitors. Your mention rate only means something next to theirs. That ratio is your AI share of voice.

Running this by hand gets slow past a few dozen prompts. Sleeng generates buyer-intent questions from your URL, runs them on ChatGPT and the other major engines, logs every mention and citation, and shows your share of voice against competitors, which is the same routine above without the spreadsheet. How does Reddit fit into ChatGPT visibility?#

Reddit is one of the few sources ChatGPT cites that any brand can participate in today, and OpenAI has a formal data partnership with Reddit. The only approach that works long term is genuine, disclosed participation in threads where you can help.

The relationship is documented. In May 2024, OpenAI and Reddit announced a partnership under which OpenAI accesses Reddit's Data API to "bring enhanced Reddit content to ChatGPT and new products," especially on recent topics. Combined with Reddit's place among ChatGPT's most cited domains, that makes the threads where buyers compare tools in your category worth your attention.

How to do it safely:

  1. Find threads ChatGPT already cites. Run your prompt list and note every reddit.com URL in the citations. Those threads are proven inputs, and they are a better target than random new posts.
  2. Read the subreddit rules first. Many communities ban or limit vendor posts. Reddit's Content Policy asks users to "participate authentically in communities where you have a personal interest" and prohibits spam and content manipulation.
  3. Disclose who you are. Start with "I work at [brand]" or "Founder here." Undisclosed brand posting violates community trust and often subreddit rules, and it is exactly what gets accounts banned.
  4. Answer the question, not your pitch. Explain the tradeoff, say who your product is wrong for, and mention alternatives if they fit better. Comments like that get upvoted and stay up.
  5. Use one real account. Never use multiple accounts, bought or aged accounts, or vote manipulation. These break Reddit's rules, and a removed comment helps nobody.

Frequently asked questions

Does ChatGPT use Google or Bing for search?

OpenAI says ChatGPT search sometimes partners with other search providers and sends them rewritten queries. Its help article links to Microsoft's privacy statement for that data, and launch coverage quoted OpenAI saying it uses third-party search providers plus partner content, naming Microsoft Bing as one. OpenAI does not publish a full list, so verify your site in Bing Webmaster Tools as a baseline.

Can I block GPTBot and still show up in ChatGPT?

Yes. OpenAI documents GPTBot (training) and OAI-SearchBot (search) as independent settings. Disallow GPTBot if you do not want content used for training, and allow OAI-SearchBot so your pages can appear in ChatGPT search answers. OpenAI notes that if both are allowed, it may use one crawl for both purposes.

How long does it take for ChatGPT to notice robots.txt changes?

OpenAI's crawler documentation says it can take about 24 hours from a robots.txt update for its search systems to adjust. Getting cited is slower, because your page also has to be found by the search providers ChatGPT queries and has to beat other pages for the rewritten queries. Measure weekly rather than daily.

Is there a ChatGPT equivalent of Google Search Console?

Not today. OpenAI does not offer a webmaster console that reports how often your site is cited in ChatGPT. You can see visits from chatgpt.com in your analytics referrals, check server logs for OAI-SearchBot and ChatGPT-User, and run a fixed set of prompts on a schedule to log citations and brand mentions yourself or with a tracking tool.

Do I need a content partnership with OpenAI to be cited?

No. OpenAI has content partners, but its help center lists only two eligibility steps for ordinary sites: allow OAI-SearchBot and allow traffic from OpenAI's published searchbot IPs. It also states that ChatGPT ranks results using multiple factors and that placement is not guaranteed.

Does posting on Reddit help my brand show up in ChatGPT?

It can, if the participation is genuine. OpenAI announced in May 2024 that it accesses Reddit's Data API to bring Reddit content into ChatGPT, and Reddit threads do appear among ChatGPT citations. A helpful, disclosed answer in a thread that ChatGPT already cites can put your brand in front of the model. Spam gets removed and helps no one.
